Sony RX1R II Now Available for Pre-Order
Get Sony RX1R II at B&H Photo.
See my in-depth review of its 24-megapixel predecessor, the Sony RX1R, or view all blog posts and info about Sony RX1R.
B&H Photo has the Sony RX1 II available for pre-order. Be sure to get some extra batteries too.
The RX1R II is expected to ship Nov 25. I expect to have one for review around that time.
The 42-megapixel sensor is a big bump up from the 24MP sensor in the RX1R, but will the lens still be up to the task? Presumably, and with its same appealing rendering style.
What a shame that the built-in flash is no longer included: with its leaf shutter it was possible to flash sync at any speed on the Sony RX1R (certain cutoffs at f/2 and f/2.8), making fill flash a practical and convenient reality any time. This is a *huge* plus for outdoor portraits and such just as with the Ricoh GR.
The built-in EVF is not worth the tradeoff for loss of the flash, since the eyecup (which I like) won’t let the EVF retract anyway. So now one has to carry a bulky and awkward hot-shoe flash? Ouch.
- 42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
- Variable Optical Low-Pass Filter [of near zero practical use in the field, based on long experience, one more thing to fail perhaps]
- Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Lens
- Full HD 1080p60 Video & XAVC S Format [BUMMER, no 4K support]
- 399 Phase-Detect AF Points & 5 fps Burst
- 0.39" 2.36M-Dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF [BUMMER, 4MP upgraded would be nice, if Leica can do it, why not Sony?]
- 3.0" 1,228.8k-Dot Tilting LCD Monitor
- ISO 102400 & Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW
- Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
Curiously, the camera rear LCD shows an image in a 4:3 ratio. It’s unclear if this is just marketing, or if the camera crops 3:2 images to 4:3 for display. Presumably for marketing.
