Digital Camera Market Might be (almost) Stabilizing for ILCs
These graphs show a decline in the market for digital cameras. Graphs courtesy of CIPA. Thanks to reader Jacky G for pointing me to this data.
The ILC (interchangeable lens) digital camera market is holding up best; compare to the total shipments of all digital still cameras below, which plummeted in 2013 and shows signs of more decline in 2014.
Emerging trends like ILC cameras shooting 4K video would be interesting, but such data is not available through CIPA.
Non-interchangeable lens digital cameras have been hard-hit. Presumably this is due to camera phones obliterating the low end point and shoot market (the “what’s the point of shooting one of those when my phone does it already”) market.
I would assume that high-end fixed-lens cameras are a negligible segment, e.g. Sony RX1, Ricoh GR, Sigma DP Merrill.
